Health sciences staff attend research training

Five staff members of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at Divine Word University (DWU) returned from a “data analysis and writing workshop” in Cairns, Australia recently.
They are Mercia Girey and Cassandra Akiro, tutors from the Physiotherapy Department and Ben Ganika, Frank Yagahe and Dr Clement Manineng, lecturers from the Rural Health Department (formerly Health Extension Officer program).

The Divine Word Community is greatly saddened by the loss of lives on the Airlines PNG plane crash in Madang on October 13. Among the passengers were the parents, family members and relatives who were to attend the Missioning Ceremony of the graduating students on October 14. We are one with the families in their sorrow at this unfortunate incident.

Divine Word University students pulled off yet another successful Cultural Day, attracting hundreds of national and overseas visitors to the annual show at the Madang campus last Saturday.

Divine Word University (DWU) continues to encourage a culture of research among academics and students. Adding oil to the wheel of research at the University was a bench mark presentation of a doctoral research finding on mobile telephony in Papua New Guinea recently.

Tourism expo hailed
The 4th annual Liklik Diwai Turism Expo (LLDE) staged on 20th May at the Divine Word University’s Madang campus was hailed a success.
Student organizers of the event from the final year Bachelor in Tourism and Hospitality Management program spoke highly of how their involvement in the expo. They said participation in the expobolstered their confidence in hosting similar events when they leave the University.
Students impressed with business forum
The 27th Australia-Papua New Guinea Business Forum and Trade Expo held at the Divine Word University (DWU), Madang campus has left a positive impression upon the students that attended.
Selected students who sat through the proceedings of the forum said that it enabled them to gauge perspectives from different company representatives about business development and challenges both in Australia and PNG.
DWU hosts prestigious business meet
Divine Word University (DWU) is fast becoming a respected host of national and international conferences.
The latest high profile meeting at the University was the 27th annual PNG-Australia Business Council forum and trade expo that was held on Monday 16th May and Tuesday 17th May. DWU first hosted the same forum in 2009.
Tourism expo on again
The Divine Word University (DWU) will come alive once again this Friday 20th May with a hype of tourism related activities. This will be when the Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM) Department of DWU will host the 4th Liklik Diwai Turism Expo.

Divine Word University (DWU) celebrated World Media Freedom Day on 29th April with a variety of activities ranging from speeches, drama, songs and panel discussion. As usual, the University marked the important day, on the Friday before the annual Open Day on Sunday 1st May, 2011.

Flexible training recommended for teachers

Acting Education Secretary, Dr Joseph Pagelio has suggested stakeholders to consider upgrading skills of teachers through alternate flexible learning mode has those provided by Divine Word University (DWU).
Speaking at the National Catholic Education Convention at DWU in Madang on Monday 28 March, Dr Pagelio said due to the changing circumstances, there was a need for more proactive up skilling programs that do not take teachers away from their schools for long periods as in the past.
Establish secondary teacher training, Church told

The Catholic Church’s education agency has been challenged to establish a secondary teachers training program to complement the one offered at the University of Goroka (UOG).
Acting Education Secretary, Dr Joseph Pagelio made the call during the National Catholic Education Convention at Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang on Monday 28th March.
Dr Pagelio said it was “unhealthy” to rely on one provider (UOG).

Saturday evening, March 19th, the International Women’s Day was one of those times that DWU’s role in fostering greater gender harmony came to the fore. It saw the student body putting up a concert and hosting various speeches to honor international day. The celebration at DWU was also sponsored by Digicel PNG, Diwai Mart and other individuals on campus.

Information Systems students share Tari experience

Five final year Bachelor of Information Systems students spent a week of their first semester break early June setting up the office network of the business of the father of one of the students, Roselyne Irabu. They travelled to faraway Tari in Southern Highlands Province and set up the network for GMT Enterprises Ltd owned by Tari business George Tagobe. Four students volunteered to take up the project when Roselyne request their help after she realized a need in her dad’s business.
